REACH
Borealis is on the forefront in implementing REACH
The European regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) became effective as of June 1, 2007 and applies to the chemical industry's entire value chain. Compliance with REACH requires a regulatory evaluation and registration or authorisation for chemical substances, which are manufactured in or imported to the European Economic Area. You can download the Statement of Compliance on REACH of our products here.
Another REACH related regulation (EC) No 1272/2008 on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures (CLP) came into force on January 20, 2009. It is harmonising EU classification and labelling system of chemicals under the Globally Harmonised System (GHS). More information on CLP can be found here.
It is essential for companies that use chemical substances and mixtures to know if suppliers (i.e. manufacturers, importers) will register substances within the given transition periods. Pre-registration was the first step in confirming that these substances will be available in the future. Borealis has already registered substances relevant for the company. Specific REACH information for customers is also available.
In our effort to submit the REACH compliant registration dossiers, we always consider to avoid unnecessary animal testing in preparing the datasets of the substances.
Borealis AG has been appointed to act as Only Representative (OR) for certain substances manufactured by Borealis Compounds Inc, USA (Borealis Rockport) and Abu Dhabi Polymers Company Ltd. (Borouge). For further information, please see our Borealis as Only Representative page.
As signatory of the Responsible Care Global Charter (RCGC), Borealis places priority on activities associated with the safe use and handling of its products throughout the entire value chain, from initial development to disposal. Specific REACH information for suppliers is also available.
On December 19, 2011, European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) updated the candidate list of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) for authorisation. No substances mentioned in the candidate list are present in our final products in concentrations above 0,1%(w/w). A statement on SVHC in our polyolefin products can be found here.
On February 17, 2011, European Commission published the first amendment to Annex XIV (the "Authorisation list") listing the substances subject to authorisation. Borealis provides a statement on Annex XIV substances regarding our polyolefin products.
If a substance used in our products will be put on the future (pre-)candidate lists in the framework of REACH, Borealis will aim for instant substitution of this substance(s) if technically and economically feasible. Please also check Borealis Banned and Restricted Substances (Black and Grey list) for more detailed information on SVHC and other hazardous substances which we banned or restricted in our processes and products.
With effect from 1 June, 2009 Annex XVII "Restrictions on the manufacturing, placing on the market and use of certain dangerous substances, mixtures and articles" of REACH entered into force. All existing restrictions as set out in Directive 76/769/EEC and subsequent amendments have been adopted in a consolidated form in Annex XVII. We hereby confirm that none of Borealis products are in conflict with the restrictions defined in REACH Annex XVII as amended.
