Use Communication

The identification of uses for an Exposure Assessment as part of the Chemical Safety Report (CSR) is only required for hazardous substances and mixtures in accordance with CLP regulation (EC) No 1272/2008, as well as for persistent, bioaccumulative and toxic (PBT) and very persistent and very bioaccumulative (vPvB) substances.

Identified uses of a substance are aimed to be categorised further in order to group similar exposure scenarios into use conditions. Exposure scenarios describe the exposure pathways throughout the life cycle of a substance. In this process different exposure routes, duration and frequency are the most important elements. Generic exposure scenarios will be developed to cover similar substances and their use settings.

Borealis is following Top-Down communication workflow for identified uses and associated Exposure Scenarios.

Information for suppliers

Borealis requests all of its suppliers to be REACH and CLP compliant and expects to be informed as soon as possible on any proposed uses and exposure scenarios so that applications in question can be covered. Please use the following E-mail address to channel your information: reach@borealisgroup.com

Borealis feedstock materials are used as intermediates under strictly controlled conditions (SCC). Audits are performed on a regular basis by external bodies (including authorities) to ensure compliance to the SCCs set by REACH.

The life cycle of consumed materials (e.g. monomers, feedstock) ends at Borealis, whereas incorporated materials (e.g. plastic additives) going further down the supply chain may end up at consumers.

Information for customers

The majority of our products are not classified as hazardous nor are assessed as PBT or vPvB and therefore no communication of uses need to be performed. For those products, which require an exposure assessment, we have already contacted our customers directly with a proposal of a use descriptor set.

You can download an information sheet on the communication of uses here.

Plastics Exposure Scenario (PEST) is coordinating the identification of uses of polyolefin products. PEST has opened a website for all plastic value chain actors, where also our polyolefin customers can register, and check the mapping of applications and processes. Borealis has been actively involved in the development and thus supports the PEST mapping of use descriptor sets. We want to highlight, that all relevant information and position on identified uses is given on our web site, and we have already contacted those polyolefin customers for whom uses communication is seen necessary.

For customers of Base Chemicals products please click on the relevant link to find the proposed uses to be covered by the joint registration:
