Environment and Energy

Working for the environment to become a leader in our industry

Following the report of the Club of Rome, environmental issues and awareness have increased in the wider public as well as in industry.

Since its creation in 1994, Borealis has categorically focused on environmental protection - an area that has been engraved in our company's values, strategies and organisation. Today, each of our local hubs has a dedicated Environmental Specialist, who works in close collaboration on our Environmental Platform.

Our recent Environmental Strategy to become a leader in our industry breaks with the classical view of only minimising the direct environmental impact of our operations, but extends the environmental awareness to our whole value chain, from the initial stages in the buying process to the final delivery of our products to our customers.

A tradition of caring for the environment

The importance of environmental issues at Borealis dates back to the 1990s when the company helped establish many European national packaging organisations in which we are still active. Packaging is one of our major businesses and we strive to maximise the environmental benefits of our materials by actively contributing to the efficient  functioning of recycling schemes and the development of the sound recovery of calorific values in cases where recycling is less eco-efficient. We are an active member of the Packaging and Packaging Waste taskforce of our European Plastics Industry Federation, PlasticsEurope.

Over the past ten years, the issue of carbon dioxide emissions have spurred significant public debate. Borealis has helped to develop various national organisations which have assisted in creating the Emission Trading Scheme, the EU's response to the Kyoto Protocol. Today, we have signed Voluntary agreements with government authorities on carbon dioxide or energy reduction, wherever they exist in our countries of operation.

Carefully planning our efficient use of energy

Borealis has also adopted an Energy Platform which re-groups specialists in each of our production hubs. We measure energy efficiency in every single operational unit and have action plans and investments to improve our performance.

We measure and control numerous environmental parameters as emissions to air, water and soil and report them to the authorities. These measurements are then reported to Chemical Federations within the framework of the Responsible Care programme, intended to show the overall improvement of the Chemical Industry's environmental, health and safety impact on society.
