Resources Efficiency and Waste Recovery
Reducing, recycling or recovering plastics waste is an integral part of our innovation and value creation strategy. We develop solutions that minimise waste, facilitate recycling and ensure effective recovery of plastics waste.
Our new Borstar PE 2G materials allow the reduction of up to 25% of the material used for the same packaging applications, hence bringing a step change in packaging waste reduction.
In addition, our innovative reinforced PP solution for washing machine tubs has been developed to be easily recyclable and allows the incorporation of recycled material. It helps manufacturers to meet the stringent European recycling requirements for appliances.
Recognizing the value of recycling wastes
Borealis believes that plastics are too valuable to end-up in landfills while they can be either recycled as material or be turned back into energy to substitute traditional fuels. In Vienna, Austria, the energy produced from domestic waste brings heat and hot water to a third of households and saves every year the equivalent of 400 million m³ of natural gas while cutting CO2 emissions by 2.2 million tons per year.
Borealis supports the development of European standards for high quality, solid recovered fuels for industrial uses.
Reducing our own production waste is also part of our operational excellence and we actively recycle production waste and by-products. Since 2002, we have reduced a third of our wastes generated during production (down to 15KT).
