Process Safety
Creating a mindset to nurture incident prevention
Leaks, fires and explosions can have a major impact on
employees, their families, the community, the environment, customers,
Borealis’ assets and stakeholders, as well as the company and
industry image.
As a responsible citizen, it is our moral duty to invest in the prevention of process safety incidents. Process safety priorities are part of the overall risk landscape in the company. Risks are reported on an ongoing basis and approved for action by Borealis' Executive Board.
Essential in the overall management programme is a continuous improvement loop in process safety. This has been created and made sustainable. Risks are identified, prioritised, budgeted and executed after which the cycle starts again. Borealis prioritises process safety investments before considering expansion investments.
Setting forth a foundation to avoid safety hazards
Borealis has been successful in creating a process safety mindset in the organisation with clear support from our top management. A dedicated Process Safety Department has developed tools that greatly enhance risk identification:
- a company-specific BLUE Audit programme;
- a process safety severity incident rating system;
- incident investigation tools.
With these tools, every process safety
incident is investigated,
reviewed and actions are followed up.
Progress on implementing actions is monitored at Borealis Group
level.
Borealis communicates process safety investigation reports widely among employees and industry to increase process safety awareness.
Borealis is a member of the European Process Safety Centre and actively supports industry-wide efforts to enhance process safety.
