Supporting key European industrial markets

Borealis' operations in Germany include a production site in Burghausen and Piesteritz.

Production in Burghausen

The Burghausen production site is located approximately 100 kilometres east of Munich.

Borealis' PP6 in Burghausen

Since 1989, Borealis’ operations in Burghausen have included a polyolefin production facility adjacent to OMV’s refining and petrochemical complex.

Ethylene and propylene feedstocks are mainly supplied by pipeline from the OMV refinery ethylene plant.

Borealis has two polypropylene plants (PP) and one high-density polyethylene plant (HDPE).  

A total of 190 are employed in Burghausen.

Borealis has invested EUR 200 million in a 330,000 t/y expansion of its PP facilities in Burghausen, based on its proprietary Borstar technology, to satisfy the growing market demand for plastics for advanced packaging solutions. Based on the recent capacity increases the location Burghausen reflects the third largest PP production site within Europe.

The main applications of the material grades produced in Burghausen are infrastructure and advanced packaging products in Austria, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Production in Piesteritz

Melamine is produced at Borealis’ facilities in Piesteritz,  as well as in Linz, Austria, where plant nutrients are also manufactured. Melamine products include coatings, compounds for houseware, concrete liquefiers, paint resins, fiberboard binders, special resins for textile and paper finishing, and fireblockers. Borealis is currently the melamine market leader in Europe.
