Food Packaging
Borclear™ contributes to preserving food providing a reduction in cycle times, seal strength and high stiffness
Borealis offers a broad portfolio of polypropylene
grades to meet the diverse needs of the food packaging market. We
produce a range of PP homopolymers for high
stiffness and heat resistance, PP
random copolymers for good sealing properties,
and PP heterophasic copolymers for good low temperature
resistance.
The challenge of keeping food fresh
Food, whether in its raw or processed form, is highly perishable. It therefore needs proper packaging to preserve it. The use of advanced packaging materials and methods to keep food fresh and undamaged affects the bottom line of food suppliers and retailers alike (less wastage) and has safety implications as well.
Unlike inert packaged commodities, food is often a live, dynamic system. The packaging requirements of food, therefore, are often complex and include.
- Protecting the product from physical damage,
- Preventing microbial deterioration and chemical changes,
- Maintaining an attractive appearance and transparency to help differentiate products and thereby increase sales.
While a number of packaging materials meet most of these requirements, either separately or in combination, the food packaging industry increasingly demands exceptional combinations of properties. Moreover, every product has its own specific needs based on its chemical composition, physiological condition and the type of processing required in creating the final product.
Our Borclear™ family of product grades is a polypropylene that is suited for sterilisable food applications. It offers:
- a decrease of up to 30% in cycle time due to low Seal Initial Temperature (SIT) / excellent seal strength at higher stiffness/lay-flat;
- superior optics/low blooming;
- excellent metallising capability of PP-cast films due to their high purity;
- the opportunity to substitute BOPP/CPP-laminates through co-extrusion.
