Medical Pouches
Borsoft™ PP presents versatile solution for medical applications requiring high security and integrity
Borealis has developed a range of innovative, new polypropylene grades for extruded film applications such as medical pouches and monoblister packaging as an alternative to PVC, glass, and other polymers. The grades offer low migration into medical products and liquids and provide high security and integrity during transport and handling.
Understanding the market challenge
Medical applications are challenging with extensive validation requirements, and close control of formulation and production to ensure long-term safety and efficacy for purpose.
Polypropylene (PP) is characterised by a combination of properties that makes it very useful in medical applications. It provides:
- extreme clarity,
- stiffness,
- heat resistance,
- impact resistance,
- flexibility.
The result is a versatile material that is unique among plastics and offers the additional advantage of moderate cost.
Why Borsoft PP?
Borealis' line of Borsoft PP material grades are the ideal solution for medical pouches and lamination. Compared to block copolymers, Borsoft™ solutions offer superior optical film and welding properties. The advantages of Borsoft PP include:
- softness,
- flexibility,
- tenacity,
- low temperature resistance,
- sterilization resistance of up to 121°C in steam.
Borealis' portfolio of polypropylene for medical applications consists of:
- Borsoft™ SD233CF and SC220CF for transparent cast and blown film
- Borsoft SA233CF for translucent blown film and tubing
- RD204CF and RD208CF random copolymers for cast films
- RB501BF for cast and blown technology
- Special homopolymers, including HD601CF, Bormod™ HC905TF and DM55pharm, all for cast, thermoformed, and blown film.
