Melamine

AMI Melamine provides high stability, bonding potential and good flame retardant properties

Extending the coverage of melamine applicationsBorealis produces high quality melamine, a white crystalline powder made from urea. Our melamine is traded under the name AMI Melamine and has an organic base with a chemical formula of  C3H 6N6 and an IUPAC name of 1,3,5-triazine-2,4,6-triamine.

The majority of our melamine is used to produce melamine-formaldehyde (MF)and melamine-urea-formaldehyde (MUF) resins. A small part of our production is used in crystal form as a flame retardant in soft polyurethane (PU) foams.

Why AMI Melamine?

AMI Melamine is the most valuable and sophisticated product in the nitrogen chain. This chemical compound is mainly processed as a resin and delivers:

  • High stability that allows end products containing melamine to resist high temperature exposure as well as physical and chemical degradation.
  • High bonding potential which enable surface applications with excellent properties like hardness as well as scratch and moisture resistance.
  • High nitrogen content that makes melamine ideal as a flame retardant.

Typical end applications of AMI Melamine

Most of the AMI Melamine produced worldwide is used by the wood-based panel industry. It is commonly found in markets such as construction, refurbishing, automotive and furniture.

A few of the main applications of melamine include:

  • Laminates (e.g. laminate flooring; kitchen and bathroom countertops; self assembling furniture; exterior wall claddings)
  • Wood panels (e.g. plywood; particle boards; MDF-medium density fibre boards; OSB-oriented strand boards; LVL- laminated veneer lumber)
  • Coatings (e.g. vehicle body panels; household appliances; drink cans; coil of metal sheeting)
  • Moulding compounds (e.g. table-/picnic-ware; electrical equipment, handles for pans and other utensils)
  • Flame retardants (e.g. soft furnishing; mattresses; coatings of fire doors)
  • Resins for textile and paper finishing (e.g. banknotes, wallpapers; wrinkle-free clothes)
  • Concrete plasticisers
