Phenol and Aromatics

From the only fully-integrated aromatics production unit in Europe, located in Porvoo, Finland, Borealis produces  the basic chemicals phenol and acetone.

Phenol and acetone are the essential feedstocks for end use markets as diverse as:

• Building insulation and plywood,
• Clothing and textiles,
• Compact discs and DVDs,
• Automotive components,
• Household appliances,
• Wind turbines,
• Flame retardant additives,
• Paints and other industrial coatings.

With some 25 years experience in the phenol and acetone business, our proprietary technology production unit,  is well situated to serve the growing markets in the North Western Europe as well as the Baltic countries and Russia. Expanded in 2007, the unit has a capacity of 195,000 tonnes of phenol and 120,000 tonnes of acetone. Operational excellence over the years underpins our business focus on safety, quality, reliability of supply and on time deliveries.

Logistics play a key role as phenol and acetone are challenging to store and transport.  To ensure consistent quality, Borealis uses highly sophisticated chemical tankers to export products from Finland directly to customer storage tanks or to intermediate, ISO-certified tanks for onward transportation.  For truck and railcar deliveries, we use specialized tanks to deliver products from storage tanks to customers’ locations.
