Enhanced Coaxial Cable Insulation

Insulation compounds meet the demand for higher quality signal transmission

Closing the gaps in communicationsThe rapid growth of information technology (IT) continues to drive the need for enhanced communications infrastructure

With the introduction of Triple-Play (cable television, telephony and internet) technology, 3G mobile networks and high definition digital television, this need translates into coaxial cables able to carry transmissions at increasingly higher frequencies and broader bandwidths.

To satisfy these objectives Borealis offers tailored technical solutions through its comprehensive family of physically foamed polyethylene (PE) compounds.  Designed to deliver superior insulation properties, cellular compounds provide enhanced electrical and mechanical properties for the network operator and improved processability for the cable maker.

Optimised for enhanced transmission

Cellular compounds, based on electrically clean feedstock and optimised to aid the formation of uniform, evenly distributed cells in the foamed insulation, give:

  • increased crush resistance,
  • very low dielectric losses,
  • greater signal strength,
  • higher transmission reliability up to 3000MHz operating frequencies.

Coaxial cableGreater productivity in processing

Offering excellent foaming in the gas injection extrusion of cables, insulation compounds can be processed over a wide range of conditions, in many different extruder settings, achieving up to 80% foam expansion.  Thereby making them ideal for use in a variety of coaxial and mobile antenna cable constructions.  The improved flow, melt elasticity properties and purity of compounds raise productivity and cost efficiency by enabling:

  • consistent dispersion of nucleating agent for uniform cell structure;
  • broad processing window;
  • bigger volume rolls through improved crush resistance.

Complementary cable jacketing

In support of its advanced insulation compounds, Borealis offers a wide range of Borstar™ bimodal linear low, medium and high density PE compounds for jacketing communications cables.  These deliver:

  • easy processing;
  • low shrinkage;
  • excellent stress crack resistance;
  • toughness and low temperature performance.
