Urea Tanks

Our Borecene™ polyethylene (PE) rotational moulding grades are highly valued when manufacturing urea tanks (AdBlue) for modern heavy weight vehicles.

AdBlue is a solution of 32.5% urea in water that is used in a catalytic converter. In a process called Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), the oxides of nitrogen formed at combustion are converted into harmless elementary nitrogen and water.

AdBlue is used in the latest generation of diesel-powered Euro4 and Euro5 trucks. The AdBlue solution is stored in a tank that is separate from the fuel tank. Precise amounts of the solution are sprayed into the exhaust gases in the hot exhaust manifold. The urea solution then breaks down into ammonia and reacts with the exhaust gases.

AdBlue is non-toxic and poses no serious risk to humans, animals or the environment, if properly handled. Because the product is slightly alkaline with a pH of approximately 9.0, however, it should not be stored in aluminium, brass, or mild steel. Hence, stainless steel or plastic tanks and fittings are recommended.

Plastic tanks are often preferred to stainless steel for the following reasons:

Easy integration of heat exchanger - Because AdBlue freezes at -11 C, a heat exchanger must be integrated inside the urea tank. The flowability of the Borecene materials makes this integration easy.
Leak-proof - The flowabiltiy of the Borecene materials and the rotational moulding manufacturing process ensure the production of leak-proof tanks.
Design flexibility - The flowability of the Borecene grades makes it easier to design them to fit into existing vehicle models.
Weight reduction - Plastic is substantially lighter than stainless steel, and its use contributes to a reduction in overall vehicle weight.

Air Intake Manifold

Our Borecene™ polyethylene (PE) rotational moulding grades are widely used when manufacturing air intake manifolds in heavy weight vehicles.

These applications frequently have complex designs that require good flowability of the production materials. The enhanced mechanical performance of our Borecene grades also allows for higher service temperatures compared to conventional materials or a weight reduction of the overall air intake, while retaining the superior mechanical performance of the product.

Diesel Fuel Tanks

Borealis produces a tailor made Borecene™ polyethylene (PE) resin that is ideal for diesel fuel tanks, particularly when rotational moulding is the desired conversion technique.

Rotational moulding is often preferred to blow moulding in cases of small production runs or when complex tank designs are required. By using rotational moulding over the blow moulding conversion process, customers are able to make full use of the limited space available inside a vehicle or to integrate functional components.

Compared to metal fuel tanks, plastic solutions provide a significant weight savings, as well as better fuel economy and a lower environmental impact.

Materials that make the difference

Borecene plastic solutions exceed the ECE-34 test regulations for plastic diesel fuel tanks. Moreover, their mechanical performance and diesel permeation are superior to conventional polyethylene grades.

Borecene is the preferred choice for diesel fuel tanks because it:

lowers permeability to hydrocarbon fuels,
improves mechanical properties before and after exposure to fuel,
lessens swell on exposure to fuel,
offers better surface finish,
gives very good flowability for design flexibility,
lowers explosion risk compared to metal and aluminium tanks,
does not corrode like metal tanks.

Battery Case

Borealis has developed a tailor-made polyproplyene (PP) grade for injection moulded battery cases. This material has been designed specifically for high-end battery segments where the use of conventional polypropylenes is not acceptable.

Our BC545MO is ideally suited for injection moulded battery cases, providing an optimum combination of mechanical properties such as durability and surface appearance. This polypropylene plastic solution is approved for use by major Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) in Europe and delivers the following benefits:

Excellent impact-stiffness ratio,
Very good heat stability due to tailor made additivation,
Very good surface appearance due to low stress whitening.

Liquid and Header Tanks

Borealis produces a tailor made Borecene™ polyethylene (PE) resin that is ideal for liquid washer and header tanks, particularly when rotational moulding is the desired conversion technique.

Rotational moulding is often preferred to blow moulding in cases where complex tank designs are required. By using rotational moulding over the blow moulding conversion process, automotive manufacturer are able to fit the largest possible tank volume within a limited space in the engine compartment.

The easy flow of our Borecene polyethylene grades allows design freedom for easy tank integration, as well as lightweighting due to the grade's excellent mechanical performance compared to conventional materials.
