Leadership in Polyolefin Technology
Bridging the gap between catalyst design, polymerisation, and unique products
The mission to be a leading innovative supplier of
plastic solutions for polyethylene (PE) and
polypropylene (PP) rests largely on 3 key competences
that we continue to develop and invest in heavily. These are the
Borstar innovation platform which consists of:
- multimodal PE and PP polymerisation processes,
- several tools enabling innovative molecular design,
- post reactor polymer modification.
The latter includes cross linking, a process that significantly extends key PE properties to enable it’s use in some extremely demanding applications that are at the heart of infrastructure in modern society.
Polymerisation Process
All modern plastics are produced in a polymerisation process. The polymerisation process has a major effect on the properties of the plastic and thereby exerts a direct impact upon the satisfaction of all those involved in the transformation and use of the plastic in industrial and domestic artefacts. Borealis’ proprietary Borstar polyolefin polymerisation process was designed from the outset to produce PE and PP for the most demanding applications by enabling molecular design; thereby distinguishing any PE/PP for the job at hand because of the specific high performance Borstar PE/PP for a given specific application.
The Borstar Innovation Platform
The twin polyolefin (PE/PP) production technologies form
the Borstar Innovation Platform that are focused on delivering
innovative solutions through their efficient and flexible design.
Borstar key components are:
- Proprietary polyolefin multimodal process technology,
- Proprietary catalyst systems.
Borstar multimodal polymerisation process
The Borstar process enables tailor made polymer solutions for demanding applications via the following features:
- Broad ranging polymer design freedom (eg molecular weight, molecular weight and comonomer distributions, crystal morphology and tacticity (for PP);
- Large product property window and feature combinations (e.g. , high strength and processability, stiffness and impact, clarity and toughness);
- High and consistent quality; supported by a proprietary developed Advanced Process Control (APC).
Starting the design process with the value chain
The innovation process starts with understanding and interpreting the needs of the whole value chain from polymer to end user; thereafter the key steps are:
- Align development people on a limited number of targeted market needs matched to our core competences;
- Use our proprietary innovation methodology and exploit to the full Borstar and Borealis technologies.
Safeguarding our intellectual property
Borealis protects production processes, catalysts, polymers and applications of the polymers. The Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) team is specialised in knowledge protection, trademarks, contracts, freedom to operate (FTO) evaluations, enforcement and opposition.
