Why Borstar?
Stretching the boundaries in processing polyolefins
As an innovation leader, Borealis has always been at
the forefront when it comes to developing and offering unique solutions
to the plastics industry. There is no better example of this than
Borstar, Borealis’ state-of-the-art
multi-modal proprietary technology for PE and
PP.
Borealis did not accept the traditional limitations that processing
polyolefins presented to the industry. Instead, it actively sought ways to
overcome these limitations and find new ways to benefit the plastics
industry, the environment and society as a whole.
The Borstar process offers simultaneous improvements in conversion economics and in key environmental aspects, such as source reduction and recyclability. Borealis guarantees continued Borstar development and is further commercializing the next generation of Borstar: Borstar 2G for both polyethylene and polypropylene.
Tailoring molecular structure to meet the need
The cornerstone of our Borstar technology for manufacturing PE and PP is tailoring the molecular structure of the polyolefins to meet customer's demands. It is the only existing advanced technology designed for PE and PP which offers such a high level of process and product tailoring.
The Borstar process provides innovative polymers:
- with both good mechanical properties and good processability;
- in a broad range of product applications (e.g. pipe, packaging, etc.);
- at competitive cost and less burden on the environment (e.g. downgauging);
- resulting in higher sales margins for the plastics industry and creating value for Borealis in the process.
Our customers expect more and Borstar delivers. Value for our customer means delivering consistently superior property products that can be converted faster and often at lower thickness to give sustainable value.
Borstar yields a number of special property and structural benefits. These include:
- high environmental stress-cracking resistance (ESCR),
- low shrinkage,
- long-term creep/burst resistance,
- in PP homopolymers & copolymers the stiffness/impact balance is tailored to uniquely high levels.
All this comes from tailoring the resin's molecular structure in both the PE and PP processes.
