Borealis releases inaugural Sustainability Issues Monitor

24.10.2007

The Sustainability Issues Monitor surveys and analyses the key economic, environmental and societal issues facing the polyolefins industry today.

Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, releases the inaugural issue of the Sustainability Issues Monitor, which surveys and analyses the key economic, environmental and societal issues facing the polyolefins industry today. The report surveyed European converters to assess the importance of and response to sustainability challenges, such as the rising cost of raw materials and energy, the perceived prevalence of plastic litter and the effects of chemicals on health.

The publication, resulting from a three-year tracking process, is the first public report presenting quantitative and qualitative survey findings on these sustainability matters related to the plastics industry. It provides valuable information to polyolefin converters, allowing them to compare and benchmark their approach to sustainability issues.

The top-ranking sustainability issues based on the report’s findings are the cost of raw materials and energy, waste recycling and international competition. Other key findings include the importance of innovation when it comes to addressing cost and competition issues. The report also shows the convergence of key environmental and economic issues into a broader resource efficiency agenda for industry.

“These findings clearly mark a call to make the optimum usage of raw materials,” comments Borealis Chief Executive Designate Mark Garrett. “It reconfirms our Value Creation through Innovation strategy and our commitment to a sustainable product-to-market model. Our shared challenge is to build partnerships to develop products that deliver value not only to business but to society at large.”
