Clean drinking water now reaches villages in India all year round through BorSafe PE100 pipes

24.10.2007

PE100 pipe from Borouge spans 765km of rugged terrain to transport drinking water from the Godavari River to half a million people living in 450 villages in the Godavari district.

Through their Water For the World initiative Borouge and Borealis, leading providers of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, are helping the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust to eliminate water scarcity in the drought-prone upland areas of East and West Godavari districts of Andhra Pradesh, India.

Durable and flexible PE100 polyethylene pipe that spans 765km of rugged terrain now transports drinking water from the Godavari River to half a million people living in 450 villages in the Godavari district all year round. These villagers need no longer rely on scarce rainfall or brackish groundwater with excessive amounts of fluoride.

The Sathya Trust required high quality, durable pipes capable of handling water hammer and surge pressure. Borouge Vice President Pipe, Andre van Uffelt says the Trust was careful in selecting the material: “It also had to be easy to install, easy to maintain and resistant to corrosion so they chose BorSafe PE100 grade for its proven high standards of quality.”

The black PE100 BorSafe™ HE3490 LS from Borouge was chosen. Produced using advanced Borstar technology, it is a bimodal, high density polyethylene classified as a Minimum Required Strength (MRS) 10.0 material and well suited to pressure pipe systems. It has an expected lifecycle of 100 years, outperforming most traditional pipe materials.

Founded in 1972, the Sri Sathya Sai Central Trust is a charitable trust under the Sri Sathya Sai Seva Organisation dedicated to serving the poor in India. It has undertaken a number of activities to improve the provision of education, healthcare, drinking water supply and preservation of India’s cultural heritage. The Trust has funded several major drinking water projects including:

Borouge Vice President Pipe, Mr van Uffelt adds: “Partnerships like this with the Sathya Sai Trust demonstrate Borouge’s ability to deliver solutions to global challenges. It also shows the strength of our commitment to the Water For the World initiative to address global water challenges.”
