Borealis Innovations support Automotive Industry meet challenges Head-On

Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, will demonstrate its active commitment to supporting the automotive industry tackle on-going manufacturing, performance, weight-saving and fuel-reduction challenges at the 33rd VDI International Congress "Plastics in Automotive" from March 25-26, 2009 in Mannheim, Germany.

Borealis' latest polypropylene (PP) innovations for pioneering applications by renowned manufacturers of automotives BMW and Opel, its technological breakthroughs in single-material solutions, and the company's global investment in new compounding in China, supply and sales support for automotive customers, will be showcased at Stand 54.

"Visitors to the VDI will have the opportunity to see for themselves why Borealis' Daplen™ PP resins and XMOD high performance short glass fibre-reinforced compounds are among specifiers' top choices for the development of interior, exterior and under-bonnet parts. Our commitment to material innovation and close cooperation with Tier One suppliers and automotive OEMs, in combination with investments to extend our global coverage and supply capabilities, ensure we are best-placed to deliver the support the industry needs to overcome its complex manufacturing and economic challenges," comments Harald Hammer, Vice President of Borealis' business unit Mobility.

Innovation and investments to benefit the automotive industry include:

  • Reducing vehicle weight by replacing steel: a customised all PP rear seat carrier for the new BMW 7 series, delivering a significant weight reduction for the total system and improved recyclability by using an all PP-solution.
  • Improving supply capabilities: new compounding sites, including a 50,000 tonnes plant in China for automotive engineering plastics through Borealis' joint venture Borouge, one in Brazil and manufacturing and supply agreements with affiliates of Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation. 
  • Strengthening on-the-ground support: the appointment of sales agent, Polymer Z, to target the North American automotive market.
