
Borealis delivers improved benefits for food container manufacture

Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions, announces the launch of two new generation BorPure™ materials for transparent food containers that offer a step change in organoleptics, a 10% reduction in cycle times and energy, and CO2 reduction of up to 4 tonnes per year for the converter.
BorPure RG466MO and BorPure RJ377MO are high transparency polypropylene (PP) random copolymers targeted primarily at the different market segments of house- and kitchenware (RG466MO) and thin wall packaging (RJ377MO). Based on proprietary Borealis Nucleation Technology (BNT) the high melt flow rate (MFR) and high purity materials meet market preferences towards no tainting of taste and odour of food.
BorPure RG466MO delivers a significant change in taste and odour performance. It also offers a combination of excellent stiffness/impact balance, low warpage, good anti-static behaviour and ease of moulding for complex shapes, which together make it an ideal solution for food storage containers used in the kitchen and around the house.
BorPure RJ377MO combines its market leading organoleptic properties with excellent transparency, drop impact, top load and denesting performance. This allows manufacturers to create thin wall containers and lids that can be stacked easily inside and on top of one another without cracking. Typical applications benefitting from such performance include packaging for salads, sauces, dairy and convenience meals, transparent packaging for houseware as well as caps and closures.
Both grades advance manufacturers' drive for greater cost-efficiency. Their high crystallisation speeds, and ease of moulding and demoulding allow for fast production and short cycles. This creates the potential for high output in the injection moulding process. For example, when tested on a 2-cavity-cup-mould, the high throughput achieved with BorPure RG466MO resulted in more than 450 cups/hr (850ml cup- 0,37 mm thickness).
Packaging converters can take advantage of significant reduction in cooling time due to faster crystallisation thus reducing the energy by 10%. This creates up to 5% lower CO2 emissions during production, generating both cost savings and environmental benefits.
