Tackling Waste: European Innovation is Reshaping the Future of the Plastic Circular Economy

Borealis featured in Euronews "Made in Europe" Series

A Blog Article by Virginia Wieser, Senior Manager, Corporate Content Management

“Can sustainable solutions and state-of-the-art innovative technologies reshape plastic recycling and its circular economy both in Europe and across the World? We travelled to Austria to find out.”

Euronews

We are excited to be featured in Euronews’ Made in Europe series. The program takes viewers inside our Head Office in Vienna, and Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria, where we work on developing and testing products and services together with our customers.

Turning Plastic Waste into Value

Plastic is essential for modern life, however it must be managed responsibly. At Borealis, we are driving the shift from a “take-make-waste” model to a circular economy. With our circular approach, we transform used plastics into high-quality materials for industries infrastructure, mobility and consumer products. This keeps plastics in the loop and out of nature.

“Innovation is the key for success and to make a difference. (…) For the European industry, we need to push boundaries. Otherwise, the others push the boundaries, and we will be left behind.”

Stefan Doboczky, Borealis CEO

Innovation at the Core

Innovation is how we lead. Our Linz Innovation Headquarters brings together experts from more than 35 nations and advanced facilities to co-create solutions with our customers. From lighter car parts that save fuel to leak-tight pipes that prevent water loss, our proprietary technologies such as as Borstar® and Borcycle™ help reduce waste and carbon footprint. It’s places like this where we turn challenges into opportunities.

Global Responsibility: Project STOP

We understand that sustainability goes beyond our gates. That is why we co-founded Project STOP with our partner SYSTEMIQ in Indonesia, where 60 percent of waste is uncollected. Together with local partners, we have connected more than 620,000 people to waste management and created 260 jobs. Our ambition is to scale up to reach 2 million people and create 1,000 jobs. We aim to stop plastic from leaking into rivers and oceans and build waste systems that last.

Making a Difference

Our products enable modern life by keeping food fresh, making cars safer, and supporting renewable energy while addressing climate and resource challenges. Safety and sustainability guide us in what we do, and how we do it. At Borealis, we are committed to innovation and accelerating the transition to a circular economy.
