Enabling Circularity for our Customers

Borealis is determined to expand its leading position as a universal supplier of circular polyolefin solutions that enable our customers to pursue a sustainable living.

Empowering our customers

We are dedicated to enabling our customers transition to circular solutions, a quest reiterated in our recent We4Customer (We4C) strategy update.

We offer a unique portfolio of advanced circular polyolefin solutions tailored to our customers’ evolving needs, made possible by our unparalleled presence along the entire plastic value chain. This allows us to meet our customers’ expansive set of circularity criteria - be it minimizing the carbon footprint, closing the loop on plastic waste, achieving virgin-like properties, meeting regulatory requirements, ensuring cost-efficiency, and conveying an impact story to consumers.

Borealis’ unique approach to Circularity

The key to circularity is an intimate understanding and presence in all parts of the plastics value chain. This begins with product design, followed by waste handling, mechanical and chemical recycling and the use of alternative carbon sources to close the plastic loop.

Design for Eco-Efficiency

We design products that optimize resource use and minimize waste use without compromising quality, safety, or performance throughout an extended product lifespan

More about design for Eco-Efficiency

Design for Reuse

We apply our expertise in plastic use and processing to create systems and business models for reuse, helping to maximize and extend the lifetime of products already in circulation

More about Design for Reuse

Design for Recycling

Through appropriate material and design choices, we design products that can easily be collected through dedicated channels, sorted into mono-material streams, and sent to recycling

Waste collecting and sorting

In waste collection and sorting, we work closely with partners to assure chain of custody from certified waste sources.

Mechanical Recycling

Our Borcycle™ M transformational mechanical recycling technology delivers industry-leading efficiency, giving plastic waste another life while achieving a significant carbon footprint reduction. We improved this technology to produce higher quality mechanically recycled polymers making them suitable for high-performance and sensitive applications

More about mechanical recycling

Chemical Recycling

Our vital complementary technology, Borcycle™ C valorizes residual plastic waste streams not suitable for mechanical recycling and that would otherwise go to incineration or landfill. Chemical recycling enables the production of high-quality, virgin-like, drop-in recycled plastics suitable for demanding applications.

Circular Progress in detail

As a trusted partner, we contribute our deep polyolefin knowhow and collaborate with our customers at inception – when we Design for Circularity:

  • Design for eco-efficiency:
We design products that optimize resource use and minimize waste use without compromising quality, safety, or performance throughout an extended product lifespan.
  • Design for Reuse:
We apply our expertise in plastic use and processing to create systems and business models for reuse, helping to maximize and extend the lifetime of products already in circulation.
  • Design for recycling:
Through appropriate material and design choices, we design products that can easily be collected through dedicated channels, sorted into mono-material streams, and sent to recycling.

In waste collection and sorting, we work closely with partners to assure chain of custody from certified waste sources.

We maintain a strong presence in the key forms of recycling:

  • Mechanical recycling:
Our Borcycle™ M transformational mechanical recycling technology delivers industry-leading efficiency, giving plastic waste another life while achieving a significant carbon footprint reduction. We improved this technology to produce higher quality mechanically recycled polymers making them suitable for high-performance and sensitive applications
  • Chemical recycling:
Our vital complementary technology, Borcycle™ C valorizes residual plastic waste streams not suitable for mechanical recycling and that would otherwise go to incineration or landfill. Chemical recycling enables the production of high-quality, virgin-like, drop-in recycled plastics suitable for demanding applications.

For certain applications, our customers look for drop-in solutions based on alternative types of feedstock:

Biobased carbon:
Using carbon from bio-based, renewable feedstocks—as seen today in the Bornewables™ portfolio.

Atmospheric carbon:
