Fulfilling the needs of converters and consumers

Borealis' new product family for packaging applications, Daploy™ WB140HMS, makes it possible to produce extruded PP foams with a wide density range and a broad property profile.

The packaging industry is driven primarily by the need for solutions offering cost performance, mainly by way of weight reduction, and faster converting speeds. Up until recently, the creation of foamable polypropylene (PP) grades has been one of most difficult challenges for PP producers. Conventional PP inherently exhibits relatively low melt strength and melt extensibility. This results in processing problems such as uncontrolled bubble growth in PP foam. What is more, standard PP grades can only be foamed down to densities of around 500 kg/cm³.

Daploy WB140HMS: PP with an LDPE-like processability

The only solution for pure PP is to modify the polymer structure significantly in order to enhance both melt strength and melt extensibility. Our new product family for packaging applications, Daploy™ WB140HMS, makes it possible to produce extruded PP foams with a wide density range and a broad property profile. Daploy WB140HMS is a long chain-branched PP polymer developed for the foam extrusion process. Unlike conventional PP, Daploy WB140HMS has a HMS plus greatly increased extensibility in the melt phase. This is also the case when the grade and its mixtures are combined with other propylene polymer materials. Based on the unique rheological behaviour of Daploy WB140HMS, cell growth and foam structure can be stabilised much better than when using conventional PP. Collapse and coalescence of cells is prevented or significantly reduced, enabling the manufacture of closed-cell, low-density foams.
