Product safety and global product compliance
Borealis is committed to Responsible Care® and wants its products to pose no risk to humans or the environment at any stage of their life cycle. To ensure this, Borealis applies strict chemicals management rules and enforces high Product Stewardship standards.
Borealis has adopted a hazardous chemicals strategy, which takes into account the level of hazard and risk, as well as regulatory developments and stakeholder concerns. Open and transparent communication with stakeholders is one of the cornerstones of Responsible Care®.
The company embraces the aims of the European Green Deal, and actively engages in advocacy to make the EU Chemical Strategy for Sustainability a success.
Borealis provides information on how the company manages hazardous chemicals, product compliance to the European Union regulation on Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (EU REACH) and the European Union regulation on Classification, Labelling and Packaging of substances and mixtures (EU CLP), as well as to other relevant legislation in our global markets, and on how Borealis supports its customers to comply with relevant application-related product legislation.
Expertise Along the Value Chain
Product Stewardship is part of Borealis’ Health, Safety, Environment and Quality (HSEQ) function. Product Stewardship plays a role at various steps of the lifecycle of a product.
Raw Materials
All of the raw materials that go into Borealis’ products are carefully assessed to determine their safety and regulatory status. The company’s suppliers need to provide comprehensive information including up-to-date Safety Data Sheets, composition information and, depending on the end application, additional regulatory information. Raw materials are only allowed to be used in Borealis' production plants after they have been approved by the Product Stewardship department.
Production
The locations’ HSE departments take care that all chemicals are used safely in Borealis production processes and that national chemical regulations are adhered to.
Products
The Product Stewardship department assesses each product for its safety and regulatory compliance across all target markets and applications. Safety Data Sheets and other compliance documents are issued and published on Borealis’ website for customers.

Through carrying out safety assessments and providing product documentation, Borealis supports its customers to bring safe consumer products to the market.
Waste & Recycling
Borealis is committed to making plastics circular. When post-consumer waste is mechanically recycled, it is impossible to know the full composition of the recycled material. Borealis has therefore developed risk assessment criteria and a testing regime to guarantee compliance with chemical legislation (e.g. REACH and CLP) and relevant application related legislation.
Feedstock
Borealis uses a wide variety of different feedstocks for polyolefin and base chemical production. The company utilizes International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) PLUS for tracking bio-based and circular raw materials. ISCC PLUS is a sustainability certification program for ensuring the traceability of bio-based and circular raw materials throughout the entire value chain.
