Borealis invests in new innovation software and tools

Borealis, a leading provider of innovative, value creating plastics solutions, continues to lead the market in the implementation of technologies and systems that accelerate its new products to market.

Recently, Borealis reached an agreement with Symyx to provide leading-edge software and modular workflows, which help maximise the return on research and development investments and improve its high-throughput experimentation capabilities. Borealis is currently investing substantially in its Innovation Centres in Austria, Finland and Sweden as well as in a Borstar® pilot plant in Schwechat, Austria, to improve its innovation capability in the polyolefins and base chemical industries.

The deal includes:

  • the implementation of Symyx Software to support both high-throughput research and conventional research methodologies,
  • the delivery of a Symyx Tools Parallel Pressure Reactor (PPR) workflow for the Innovation Centre in Porvoo (Finland), and
  • a joint technology development programme for a polymer development system at the Innovation Centre in Linz (Austria).

"This deal supports our asset investments in improving our innovation capability," confirms Borealis Vice President for Innovation and Technology Wim Roels. "It helps us shorten the time it takes for us to bring new products onto the market and upgrades the work we are doing with our business partners to bring step-change innovations to the infrastructure, automotive and advanced packaging markets."

The implementation of the investment will be completed by the end of 2009.
