Borealis to showcase a full range of circular economy solutions at PRSE 2024

  • Borealis will showcase its circular economy solutions at the Plastics Recycling Show Europe (PRSE) on 19-20 June 2024 in Amsterdam
  • Borealis will present a comprehensive circular portfolio, including innovative solutions based on mechanical and chemical recycling, and solutions produced with renewable feedstock
  • EverMindsTM in Action: the show represents an opportunity for Borealis to drive progress on its mission to accelerate the transition to a circular economy for plastics

Borealis will attend the Plastics Recycling Show Europe (PRSE) on 19-20 June 2024, showcasing a full range of sustainable solutions designed to meet increasing customer demand for high-performance products that advance circularity and offer a reduced carbon footprint. The display will include Ecoplast and mtm post-consumer recyclate (PCR) solutions, and Rialti recyclate-based compounding solutions. It will also feature product lines based on BorcycleTM M advanced mechanical recycling and BorcycleTM C chemically recycled feedstock, as well as the BornewablesTM portfolio produced with renewable feedstock. In addition, key examples of design for recycling and reuse will be shared.

Borealis’ circular solutions are based on the integrated, complementary technologies and approaches that form the Circular Cascade, a model that decouples growth and the making of plastics from fossil fuels through reuse, design for recycling, mechanical recycling, chemical recycling, and the use of renewable feedstock.

Borealis has set ambitious goals to increase the share of circular solutions in its product portfolio. In pursuit of these targets, the company has made a number of significant announcements recently.

  • Borealis has expanded its mechanically recycled plastics compounding capacity with the acquisition of Rialti, an Italian polypropylene (PP) compounder of recyclates, in November 2023. The acquisition increases Borealis’ production capacity for PP compounds based on mechanical recyclates by 50,000 metric tons per year.
  • Borealis has acquired Integra Plastics AD, a Bulgarian advanced mechanical recycler. The acquisition enhances Borealis’ portfolio of advanced mechanical recyclates, adding more than 20,000 metric tons of recycling capacity per year.
  • Borealis has received Letters of No Objection from the US FDA concerning the use of specific grades of its Borcycle M PCR in food-grade packaging.
  • Borealis and OMV have signed a long-term agreement with TOMRA for recycling feedstock based produced from mixed waste.
  • Borealis announced to establish a recyclate-based polyolefins compounding line in Belgium.

Accelerating plastics circularity through value chain co-operation

Some of the key Borcycle M solutions that will be on display include innovations that have been shortlisted as finalists for the Plastics Recycling Europe Awards 2024:

  • Together with our partner Rani Plast, we are introducing a new flexible packaging solution that contains 80% PCR polyethylene (PE) combined with 20% virgin PE. Designed for tissue paper products, this multi-layer construct uses the high-quality grade Borcycle M CWT100VL to deliver the same strength and performance as conventional packaging, without any increase in material thickness.
  • Within our Mobility division, we are proud to showcase the center console carrier for the new Peugeot 3008, made from Borcycle GD3600SY. This glass-fiber reinforced PP compound with over 65% PCR content, was developed in collaboration with Stellantis and Plastivaloire to enhance circularity and reduce the carbon footprint of automotive interiors.
  • Through value chain cooperation with thin wall packaging expert PACCOR and card producer Cartamundi, Borealis identified the optimal replacement for virgin polyolefins in card game packaging. As a result, Cartamundi’s card game packaging is now more circular, being made with Borcycle M mechanically recycled polyolefins.

ISCC certification

The circular content in Borealis’ sustainable solutions is guaranteed by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC PLUS) based on a mass balance approach. The Ecoplast and mtm locations are now ISCC PLUS certified, allowing plastic waste that is unsuitable for mechanical recycling to be used as feedstock in the Borcycle C chemical recycling supply chain. ISCC PLUS is a global certification that covers the entire supply chain, from raw material to final product. It ensures compliance with high ecological and social sustainability requirements and offers traceability from the first collection point.
