Project STOP update: Latest achievements in Muncar, Indonesia

The following news have been published by Project STOP:

With 2020 well under way, we are happy to share that as of the start of this month, more than 48,000 people in Muncar and Pasuruan are receiving waste collection services for the first time. Together with the Muncar community, Project STOP

• has kept 4,000 tonnes of both organic and inorganic waste (of which 517 tonnes are plastic) from entering the ocean and
• has created 90 full-time jobs in waste management.

With our three city partnerships in Muncar, Pasuruan and Jembrana, we aim to reach 450,000 people and prevent more than 10,000 tonnes of plastic from leaking into the environment over the next five years.
As we establish replicable, economically sustainable, circular waste management solutions that can be expanded across Southeast Asia, and as we continue to test and innovate, our new partnerships will help us

• increase local service delivery,
• develop more targeted approaches to household behaviour change,
• and create holistic governance structures.
• In addition, new content, training materials and best practices will help spread our learning to other cities and interested changemakers around the world.

The Project STOP team, along with SYSTEMIQ and Borealis, are grateful to our partners – the Indonesian Ministry of Environment and Forestry, the Coordinating Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Investment, the Banyuwangi Government, the Regencies of Jembrana and Pasuruan, as well as the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NOVA Chemicals, Nestlé, the Alliance to End Plastic Waste, and Borouge, along with our technical partners Schwarz, SWI, Veolia and HP Inc. We are excited to go big in 2020 to address some of the most important structural constraints hindering the set-up and operations of waste systems nationwide.
