Borealis speeds up innovation for Wire & Cable applications

Borealis, a leading provider of chemical and innovative plastics solutions, announces the completion of an additional investment in a new pilot cable line for the development of wire and cable products at its Innovation Centre in Stenungsund, Sweden.

The new pilot cable line enables manufacturing of various cable constructions for electrical tensions up to 35 000 volts and fulfils the specific requirements for product cleanliness. The line comes with a modern computerised control system to ensure maximum process stability and a continuous quality.

“The investment in a new cable line will shorten the lead time for wire and cable product development,” says Alfred Stern, Borealis Senior Vice President for Innovation and Technology. “With this state-of-the-art machinery, we will be able to strengthen our leading position in this growing market segment.”

This latest investment ties in with Borealis’ ongoing major expansion in Stenungsund. Borealis’ largest-ever investment in a new 350,000 tonnes per year (t/y) polyethylene plant is on track to be started up at the end of 2009, enhancing Borealis’ capability to provide advanced materials for wire and cable applications.

The Borealis Innovation Centre in Stenungsund, Sweden is Borealis’ competence centre for wire and cable product development. Borealis is currently building its new Innovation Headquarters in Linz, Austria and also operates an Innovation Centre in Porvoo, Finland.
