Excellent starting resin for flexible TPO compounds: New soft random heterophasic PP

As an industry leader in innovative polyolefins-based solutions, Borealis offers a broad portfolio of products for the compounding and polymer modification industries.

As an industry leader in innovative polyolefins-based solutions, Borealis offers a broad portfolio of products for the compounding and polymer modification industries. These include polyethylene (PE) resins in the high density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE), and low density polyethylene (LDPE) families; polypropylene (PP) resins, including homopolymer, random, and heterophasic; and speciality products such as Queo™ as well as other plastomers and elastomers.

One type of PP, random heterophasic copolymers, is especially suited for the manufacture of flexible applications requiring high thermal stability and low flexural modulus. A new member of this Borealis family of soft PP materials is SB330CF, a soft random heterophasic PP that serves as an ideal component for thermoplastic olefin (TPO) compounds used to produce membranes, such as those used in roofing, waterproofing, and the automotive sector.

The new SB330CF fills a market gap by enabling more flexible tailoring of TPOs to meet specific application requirements. Compared to conventional PP materials, using SB330CF requires less polymer modifier to reach the flexural modulus values necessary for flexible membranes.

Below a summary of the benefits of using Borealis soft PP materials such as SB330CF:

  • Offer flexural modulus range from 500 to 330 MPa, and an MFR from 0.8 to 7 g/10 min. (230°C/2.16 kg)
  • Enable benchmark TPO production for automotive and construction industries, among others
  • Outstanding low temperature behaviour combined with high heat resistance
  • Excellent starting resins for flexible TPO compounds used for flexible membranes
  • Provides customers with an attractive alternative when sourcing soft PP

“Up until recently, there have been few options when it comes to sourcing flexible and soft PP materials,” says Edwin Verdurmen, Borealis Application Marketing Manager. “We were pleased to be able to present this viable alternative to our customers and partners in person at the K 2022 earlier in October and are also looking forward to presenting it at the upcoming AMI conference Waterproof Membranes 2022.”

AMI Waterproof Membranes will take place from 7 to 9 November 2022 in Cologne, Germany.
