Climate and Energy

Bringing down greenhouse gas emissions to mitigate global warming is imperative. The chemical industry is energy- and emissions-intensive, while providing essential materials for almost the entire economy. However, becoming climate-neutral is not out of reach and Borealis is committed to contributing to the transformation.

We identified necessary steps to get there, such as fulfilling our operation's electricity needs from 100% renewable sources, implementing energy efficiency measures, installing carbon capture projects and reducing the carbon footprint of our products and operations. We have anchored sustainability to play the center role in our 2030 strategy and aspire to be a front-runner in the chemical industry's transformation towards more sustainable business practices.

We have committed ourselves to be a net-zero business by 2050 the latest and have set ourselves intermediary targets so we can reach this goal step by step.

Our Ambition

As one of the largest and most diversified industries in Europe, and as a significant emitter of GHGs, the chemical industry plays an important role in helping to achieve long-term GHG emission reductions in a European and global context. To understand the impact of our emissions on climate change, we calculate an emissions inventory according to The Greenhouse Gas Protocol. These are our climate and energy targets for 2030:

Our Approach

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions is a matter of making many small changes that accumulate to have a big impact. These are some of our actions:

  • We report our Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions and have set ourselves Scope 1 & Scope 2 targets
  • We established a cross-functional Climate Strategy Coordination team to drive our transformation to a net-zero business
  • We make on-site renewable energy investments, such as photovoltaic modules, and renewable power purchase agreements
  • We ensure energy efficiency improvements in our production locations, through ISO 50001 compliance and frequent energy screening programmes
