Gadolin Chemistry Lab

Nurturing interest in science and technology in young children are vital to finding innovative solutions to complex global sustainability challenges. Therefore, since 2017, Borealis has been co-financing the Gadolin Chemistry Lab due to its ability to offer hands-on experiences in a real university laboratory.

An Inspiring Environment for Learning, Development and Research

The Gadolin Chemistry Lab is a partnership between the University of Helsinki and the Finnish chemical industry.It aims to support the positive image of chemistry and offers educational alternatives in the field of chemistry. It is located in the Kumpala campus of the University of Helsinki's Department of Chemistry and is Finland's oldest and only LUMA science classroom, solely dedicated to promoting chemistry and science education. LUMA is the science education network of Finnish universities. The lab engages in experimental work and provides information about chemistry-related studies and career options to interested participants, as well as active study visits.

The Gadolin Chemistry Lab offers a wide range of experiments, such as making bubbles out of carbon dioxide ice and is customization to every study group. More information can be found below.

  • Aspirin Preparation

    This workshop, which is targeted to children, does not teach children above 12 years how aspirin is made, but they come in contact with laboratory tools such as a a water bath and filter samples.

  • Energy From Starch

    In this series of experiments, children are encouraged to learn how energy can be produced from starch, and compare that energy, to energy levels produced from other household staples, like cashews and marshmallows.

    This workshop encourages children of primary school age to learn about plastic and even learn to make their own plastic using everyday kitchen tools.
